THE CANtec Technical Institute has been recently established in Guyana in keeping with President, Dr. Irfaan Ali’s vision as stated in his New Year Message to “create new educational and work opportunities for young professionals in our country”.

Aligned with the Local Content Policy, this partnership is between leading Guyanese educational institution, School of the Nations, and Actemium Oil and Gas Training, an OPITO accredited body with over 20 years of successful OPITO programme delivery, a release said.

It noted that CANtec’s aim is to deliver a complete portfolio of OPITO certified courses and qualifications in the energy sector, with an initial focus on oil and gas qualifications, developing candidates from entry level through to the requisite competence to successfully integrate and further develop in the offshore operations and maintenance workforce and in other industries.

“CANtec provides a unique value-added proposition to the Guyanese market with the partners combining local knowledge and experience from over 20 years of in-country training delivery, as well as a proven successful track record of capacity building in a host of countries ranging from East Timor, Angola, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, through to the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago. Irrespective of location – the objective has been the same: Train; Develop; Transform.

“Candidates who have gone through our programmes can now be found in key offshore positions with major operators around the globe. The OPITO Global Training Certificates ensure capacity building with quantifiable significant impact to both the students and the country,” said Efua Odunton, Vice-President– Global Account Manager of VINCI Energies Oil and Gas Services
OPITO is the global, not-for-profit, skills body for the energy industry. It is the leading Oil and Gas Training Accreditation body to assure skills training and workplace assessment from entry level through to senior supervisors.

Wholly owned by the industry with an aim to drive safety and competency improvements to benefit the energy sector, more than 375,000 people are trained to OPITO Standards every year, in more than 50 countries through 230 accredited centres.

“CANtec will not only deliver classroom and workshop courses but can accompany trainees through to on-the-job training and expert level courses.

“Flexibility in form of delivery will be paramount for CANtec – with training being delivered through a mixture of traditional classroom delivery, workshops and practical hands-on instruction, as well as e-learning and leading-edge digital training tools.

“The OPITO Global Training Certificates offered will be in the areas of oil and gas processing, maintenance workshop practice, then a choice of mechanical, instrument and control or electrical maintenance practice,” the release said.
