Guard accused of stealing Diamond ring granted bail

A 29-year-old security guard, who allegedly stole a man’s diamond ring, was, on Wednesday, released on $25,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Akeem Coats of Water Street, Georgetown, appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the larceny charge.

Particulars of the charge alleged that on October 28, at Water Street, he stole a diamond ring valued at $400,000, property of Mario Moonsammy.

According to the facts presented in court by police prosecutor, Gillian Simmons, on the day in question, Moonsammy took his motor car to a wash bay located at Water Street to be cleaned. He left his gym bag with the ring in the vehicle.

After the vehicle was cleaned, Moonsammy drove to his workplace. It was then that he discovered that the ring was missing from his gym bag.

Moonsammy drove back to the wash bay, but the defendant reportedly ran away when he saw him. Coats was later arrested after a report was made to the police. The diamond ring has not been recovered.

The Chief Magistrate released Coats on $25,000 bail and adjourned the case until November 29.
