KAMARANG’S Sue Edwards’ 44th minute goal was good enough to earn Guyana a 1-0 win over Anguilla in the CONCACAF U-17 Championships Qualifier at the IMG Academy in Florida yesterday.

Guyana had a dominating performance, controlling the flow of the game and much of the position, but they failed to capitalise on the many chances which were created.

Sue Edwards of Kamarang, Region Seven, scored the winning goal for Guyana

Fruta Conquerors’ Sandra Johnson, in the 19th minute, stepped up to take a penalty after referee Annays Rosario didn’t hesitate to point to the ‘spot’ after one of the Lady Jags players was brought down in the ‘18’.

However, Johnson’s shot was saved by Dainelle Proctor in goal for Anguilla.
Nonetheless, Lady Jags held on to their 1-0 cushion which came from the Region Seven forward just before halftime, to take the win in their first Group C game.

Guyana will face Honduras on October 30 and Turks and Caicos Islands on November 1.
Honduras opened their campaign with a 7-0 drubbing of Turks and Caicos yesterday.

Guyana’s 18-strong squad for the qualifying tournament includes 16 Guyana-based players from across the nation, including five players from the Orealla community in Region Six, five from Georgetown and four from Region Seven.

Region One is also represented in a squad boasting a significant proportion of talent from hinterland communities.
