SAT2FARM, a new mobile app built to help agriculturalists and farmers monitor farms and detect pests and disease attacks in advance, is being offered by Guyanese company Latitude Geospatial Consulting Inc., a technology-driven GIS (Geographic Information System) Services and Spatial Data provider.

Sat2Farm is a satellite-based agricultural smartphone application, mainly developed to help the users understand their farm health, provide irrigation advisories, as well as deal with weather forecasts.

It is a simple application wherein the user plots his/her farm boundary and the requirements about the farm are provided through the same. The company provides farm specific, dynamic crop advisories, early warning of the risks (flood, drought, pest, diseases); and advisories at an affordable cost for farmers utilizing the latest technologies.

Speaking with Pepperpot Magazine, Director of Latitude Geospatial Consulting Inc. Dr. Haimwant Persaud, said the benefits of using the application includes up to 70 percent of time saved due to remote monitoring of farms, and up to 70 percent accuracy in detection of pest and disease attacks and suggestion of solutions.

Dr. Persaud, who is a certified GIS Professional working in the field of Applied Geospatial Technologies for almost 20 years, said the app also provides up to 85 percent accuracy in detection type of pest and disease attack to provide solutions; up to 12 percent reduction in water usage; and up to 30 percent improvement in crop water productivity.

According to him, farmers can also expect to have 5-10 percent reduction of agri-input costs and up to 10 percent improvement in crop productivity.

Latitude Geospatial has partnered with Satyukt Analytics, a data analytics company out of India to provide big data analytics and SaaS (software as a Service) solutions to aid precision agriculture, utilizing Spatial Data and Geospatial Technologies.

“The scalable and innovative algorithms developed combine various available earth-observation satellite data to provide the information at the desired scale (in this case at the level of the farm). The algorithms can process the multi-satellite data across the globe in different climatic conditions and are far superior, both in terms of accuracy as well as a spatio-temporal resolution,” Dr. Persaud explained.

The company can assist crop insurance companies to assess, prevent sowing, crop damage, and estimate the loss to pay the bills as early as possible. In fact, crop health data can provide insights for fertilizer/pesticide companies to supply their products in pest/disease-affected areas.

“These solutions enable data-driven farming to agriculture stakeholders such as farmers/growers globally. Our space-based Agritech solutions provide decision-making dynamic all-weather solutions to the entire agriculture sector, along with crop insurance and water resources management sectors globally. We add value by increasing efficiency, scaling productivity, and strengthening sustainability across the board,” Dr. Persaud further commented.

Meanwhile, the company offers state-of-the-art and highly reliable GIS Mapping, Satellite Imagery, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), Vessel Monitoring System, UAVs (Drone) Services, Spatial Data Analytics, and Satellite-Based Agricultural Crop Monitoring.

Geospatial technology is a term used to describe the range of modern tools contributing to the geographic mapping and analysis of the earth and human societies. It includes GIS, Remote Sensing (RS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). This Type of technology can acquire data that is referenced to the earth and used for analysis, modeling, simulations, and visualization.
