Pardoned fraudster in court again

FOUR years after being pardoned by former President, David Granger, convicted fraudster, Khemawattie Ramnauth, on Friday, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on two fraud charges and was released on bail in the sum of $3M by Magistrate Dylon Bess.

Ramnauth of Grove, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to conning a businessman out of $6.5M and forging a United States passport.

Particulars of the first charge alleged that Ramnauth, between February 20, 2020 and August 24, 2020, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, obtained from Brian Perriera the sum of $6.5M by falsely pretending that her name was Latchmin Shiwmangal, the registered owner of the property situated at Block XXX Zone, East Bank Demerara, Parcel 1107, part of Plantation Ruimveldt, Greater Georgetown, and that she was in the position to sell same to him knowing same to be false.

It is further alleged that between February 20, 2020 and October 5, 2021, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she forged one United States of America passport #454099867 in the name of Shirley Shiwmangal with a picture bearing her likeness, purporting to show that same was issued by the United States Department of State, knowing same to be forged.

Police Prosecutor, Christopher Morris, objected to Ramnauth being released on bail on the grounds that she was previously convicted for similar crimes.

He informed the court that the accused was convicted in 2015 for fraud but was pardoned by Granger  in 2017.

Magistrate Bess overruled that prosecutor’s objection and released Ramnauth on $3M bail.
