THE COVID-19 death toll continues on an upward trajectory as Guyana registered its latest death, an 81-year-old male from Region Three ((Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), on Friday last, taking the death toll to 610 since the virus was first detected in the country in March 2020.
In addition to the death toll, the number of new cases of persons who tested positive for the virus continues to increase as well with an additional 180 from some 2,004 tests conducted within the 24-hour period.
With the new confirmed cases, the country’s overall number of confirmed cases stands at 25,147 from some 26,091 tests conducted up to Friday last. The bulk of new cases were recorded in Region Four (Demerara – Mahaica) which saw 109 people testing positive.
Region Three recorded 39 new cases; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supernaam) recorded 10; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), seven new cases; Region Five (Mahaica – Berbice), five new cases; Region Eight (Potaro – Sipuruni), two new cases while Regions Nine (Upper Takutu – Upper Essequibo) and 10 (Upper Demerara – Berbice) recorded one new case, each.
At the end of Friday last, 28 persons were in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Infectious Diseases Hospital — six more within a 24-hour period -; 104 are in institutional isolation, 1,576 are in home isolation and there were nine persons in institutional quarantine.
All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which are in effect until August 31, 2021.
