Five suspects in murder of miners remanded to prison

CITY Magistrate, Dylon Bess, on Wednesday, remanded five miners, including four Venezuelans, in connection with the alleged murder of two men during a robbery at a mining camp located at Blackwater Backdam, Cuyuni River.
Nicholas Ceaser called ‘Wild buck’, 22, of Yarrowkabra Village, Linden Soesdyke Highway was charged jointly with Venezuelans Juan Oscar Calderon Lopez called ‘Gordo’,25; Jose Ramon Tovar called ‘Bashein’, 24; Luis Miguel Monrroy, 35 and Jhonny Gonzalvez called ‘Sankey Pankey’, 47.
The men appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for the capital offence of murder.
They were not required to plead to the charge which alleged that between August 4 and 5, 2021, they murdered Suresh Bachan and Steven Niles during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

Magistrate Bess remanded the men to prison until September 20. The matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court, where the preliminary inquiry will be conducted. The Guyana Chronicle had reported that 62-year-old Suresh Bachan, and 31-year-old Steven Niles, were killed during a brutal robbery at their Blackwater Backdam mining camp. According to investigators, the men are believed to have been killed between the night of August 4, around 18:00 hours, and the morning of August 5, around 06:00 hours.  On the morning of August 5, when the General Manager of the mining camp and several of his workers turned up to work, they discovered both Niles and Bachan motionless.  The robbers reportedly made off with an AR 15 firearm and the top mat from the sluice box. A post mortem examination done on the body of the two men revealed that they both died from blunt force trauma to their heads, while Niles also suffered a fractured spine.
