STEPHEN Wayne Major, 23, of Self Help Scheme, Amelia’s Ward, Linden, who was socialising with his friends on Monday afternoon, died after a trip to the popular hangout and swimming spot called “Buck Town” Christianburg, Wismar, Linden.

Police said Major allegedly drowned around 15:30 hours.
Reports indicated that Major and his friends were consuming alcohol before they ventured into the water to swim.

One friend said that Major went around the Koker area in the water and it appeared that he was doing stunts in the water by throwing himself in and coming back up.

One eyewitness said that Major dived under the water for about two minutes and resurfaced a short distance away from the Koker front. Someone attempted to rescue him but failed due to the strong water current.

Five other people, who were at the scene rushed to retrieve Major and he was brought to shore in an unconscious state. Persons at the scene performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Major but he failed to regain consciousness.

He was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are investigating the incident.
The body is currently at the morgue awaiting a post mortem examination.
