THE local authorities of Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice) are closely monitoring the fluctuating levels of floodwater in several communities.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, on Monday, Regional Chairman, Deron Adams, said Rockstone, Lamp Island and Hururu were still under water.

As it related to persons who were in shelters, Adams said that 29 persons were still being accommodated at the forestry compound at Hururu and an additional 16 persons were at another shelter in the community.

Some 18 persons were being housed at a shelter in Aroaima, 30 Kwakwani residents were at the community’s primary school and an additional six persons were being housed at the Kwakwani Secondary School. At Rockstone, there were eight persons in a shelter that was established there.

Adams disclosed that residents had been battling with reptiles and other dangerous animals as they too tried to find dry land.
“There are concerns of reptiles being found in properties, shops and so on that continues to be a concern for us,” he said.

The chairman noted that the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) had since received support from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and generous donors to mitigate the effects of the flooding.

Yearly, when the May-June rainy season comes, residents of Kwakwani would brace themselves for heavy torrential rainfall and light flooding.

However, this year, water levels rose above 15 feet, displacing almost 100 residents from their respective homes.
Last week it was also reported that the water level in Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni) was rising again.

The CDC reported that floodwaters have risen significantly in the community of Eteringbang.

The previous report stated that some 10 commercial establishments and three households had been impacted. Early assessments also indicated that water had risen to approximately three feet in some parts and continued to rise.
