ACE Guyanese boxer Elton Dharry recorded an easy victory when he fought last Saturday night in Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic.
The seasoned fighter was able to stop his opponent Reyes in the first round after three consecutive knockdowns.
Reyes was a late replacement for the Guyanese, who had not been in the ring since late 2019.
The Leguan-born boxer, who fights out of Brooklyn, New York, was originally expected to fight either a Mexican opponent or one from Omaha Nebraska, USA at the Forster Community Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa on Saturday night, but none of those opponents worked out.
He was then set to battle against Nicaraguan Julio Buitrago, at the same venue. That fighter also dropped out and then Dharry’s management team organised a fight against a seasoned Dominican, who had matched skilled with previous world title winners. The venue was changed to his home country of the Dominican Republic.
One week prior to the bout, that fighter had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances.
This led the organisers of the event to select another Dominican boxer for the bout.

DOMINANCE
Prior to his clash on Saturday, Dharry knew very little about his opponent. After a few minutes in the ring, Reyes became another statistic.
The Dominican boxer was dropped twice via crushing left hooks to his body. On the third occasion, he hit the floor after a hard right cross landed on his body. This forced his management team to throw in the towel.
Although the bout against Reyes was not what Dharry had originally expected, it was his 22nd win in 23 fights.
In November of 2019, Dharry suffered a debatable loss to home boxer Andrew Moloney for the interim WBA super-flyweight title in Melbourne, Australia.
Prior to that, he was flawless for almost a decade.
In the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Latino Rankings for the month of June, Dharry was ranked third. It was his highest ranking to date from the body. He was also highly ranked in the World Boxing Association (WBA) super-flyweight division for a number of years. In August of 2019, he was ranked fifth. Overall, he was ranked in the top 15 and then the top 10 for more than six years.

NEXT STEP
The explosive boxer is now looking to get back in the ring in September.
He said that the Reyes fight was just a warm-up for a hopeful title shot on September 25 in Guyana. That card is being organised by Gary Sinclair and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control.
Kaieteur Lefferts, Geminis Ultra Lounge, Amerigroup Properties – Jack Bharat, 212 Devices and NYSC- Jeawan Persaud helped to sponsor Dharry’s fight in the Dominican Republic.
