Bermuda coach surprised by Barbados fragility, expects tougher test against Haiti

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, (CMC) – Bermuda national coach Kyle Lightbourne said he expected a tougher test against Barbados in their CONCACAF Gold Cup preliminary round match here, but is certain tonight’s game against Haiti will be a much tighter contest.
Bristol City striker Nahki Wells, 31, led the 8-1 Bermuda romp over the Tridents at the DRV PNK Stadium on Friday night with a hat-trick, including the fastest goal in tournament history.

“We were expecting it to be a little tighter match than that,” Lightbourne told reporters after the Barbados game with Bermuda 4-1 up at the break..
“I wasn’t expecting the scoreline to be like that. I thought it would be a closer affair.
“They (Barbados) brought some players from Europe but defensively we exposed them. Good for our team and we move on.”

He added: “We know it’s going to be a tougher test against Haiti. We played them in the Gold Cup last time around when they beat us 2-1.
“We have some players that haven’t played in a while. They got some minutes under their legs so they will be better for it.
“We will be a little bit better come Tuesday, a little sharper.”

Man-of-the-Match Wells, Bermuda’s new captain after more than a year’s absence from the national team, made the breakthrough with the opener after just 17 seconds to set the tone for the rest of the match against Barbados.
Reggie Lambe, Danté Leverock, substitute Kane Crichlow, Zeiko Lewis and a Krystian Pearce own goal accounted for Bermuda’s remaining goals while Barbados replied through captain Hadan Holligan on the stroke of half-time.

Bermuda bowed out of the 2019 Gold Cup at the group stage after suffering 2-1 defeats against Costa Rica as well as Haiti before a 2-0 win against Nicaragua capped an outstanding debut campaign.
