Port Kaituma residents benefit from medical mission, donation drive

COUNSELLOR Stuart de Freitas, along with two volunteers from The Embassy of The Sovereign Military Hosptalier Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, visited Port Kaituma on a medical and donation drive on Saturday.

According to a release, the visit was coordinated / facilitated by Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Chair Orlando Thorne.

Thorne organised a tour of the Port Kaituma District Hospital and the Venezuelan refugee shelter, where the team from Georgetown was honoured to be able to meet and interact with hospital staff, patients, refugees and some members of the Warrau nation.

According to a release, the Embassy has been involved for some time with the refugees in and around Port Kaituma, focusing their missions on medical humanitarian efforts, reaching out to the vulnerable in society.

Dr. Obel, paediatrician of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, volunteered his time to attend to children at the hospital, while de Freitas, Orlando and other volunteers distributed clothing, shoes, bedding, toys, sanitiser and masks.

This mission marks Dr. Obel’s eighth visit, Ambassador de Rosière has visited in the past and de Freitas’ first visit.

The release noted that the embassy has expressed gratitude to the donors from both Canada and Guyana and the many volunteers who made the good gesture possible.
