POLICE Commander of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, recently took his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and is urging everyone under his command to get vaccinated because it’s the only way Guyana would be able to exit the deadly pandemic.

“If you get vaccinated, you’re doing your part to protect someone else who might be at risk,” Commander Ramlakhan said, adding, “As long as you remain unvaccinated, you can become infected and pass it along to other people. You’re part of that transmission chain.”

He continued: “I urge you to make certain that your families also get the vaccines, do your part to protect yourselves, your family, and friends, and remain combat-ready. Let me emphasise that these vaccines are equally effective on everyone — I have received the vaccine, and I hope you follow suit and get the vaccine when it is available.”
The Superintendent also noted that vaccination is one critical part of getting the country back to normal, in addition to continued testing and adherence to public health measures, such as wearing a mask and practising social distancing.

He described COVID-19 and its variants as “the biggest threat to the Guyanese people that we have in the country right now, and that must be defeated.”
Guyana has recorded over 442 COVID-19 deaths since March 2020 and over 18,837 known cases.

All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

The Minister of Health has also urged persons 18 years and older to take the COVID-19 vaccine, to immunise themselves against the deadly virus.
