…Action starts at 17:00hrs today
THE Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) yesterday benefitted from sponsorship from the National Sports Commission (NSC) ahead of the start of today’s National Senior National Championships. The event will get underway from 17:00hrs today and conclude on Sunday.
During the short and simple handing-over ceremony, president of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson, was applauded for guiding the development of athletics over the years.
The ceremony was held in the boardroom of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in Main Street.
In what can be one of the most competitive Senior National Track and Field Championships, the AAG will see some of the country’s top athletes at this weekend’s event at the National Track and Field Centre.
For many athletes with the aspiration of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games, it can very-well be their last chance to book a ticket to Japan.
Aliyah Abrams (400m), who also competed at the 2016 Games in Rio, is the only Guyanese track and field athlete to qualify.
Aliyah and her sister, Jasmine Abrams, who copped bronze in the 100m at the Senior South American Championship last month, are both in Guyana and will hit the ‘blocks’ at Leonora.
Arinze Chance, Jeremy Bascom and National Long Jump record holder, Emanuel Archibald, are also in Guyana for the event.
Aubrey Huston, president of the AAG, said more overseas-based athletes are expected, both Guyanese and non-nationals.
Hutson indicated that there is a triple jumper from Suriname, along with an athlete from Belize that would’ve registered.
