PHOENIX Cricket Club registered a surprising 125-run victory against fellow pro-Guyanese club Meten-Meer-Zorg NY when action in the New York National Cricket League (NYNCL) Caribbean Fest 40-over competition continued over the weekend. Sunday’s defeat has pushed the previously unbeaten MMZ side to second place in Group B and has lifted Phoenix CC to sixth in the same group. Most of the 20 teams in the two groups are pro-Guyanese sides. In the latest clash, Phoenix CC won the toss and opted to bat first. Led by former Essequibo U-19 cricketer Mahendra Persaud, the side propelled themselves to 232 before they were bowled out in the 37th over.
Persaud, who captained the side, paced his half-century. His 58 came from 45 balls and included seven sixes and a four. Support came from Keniemo Alphonso who scored 48 from 40 balls (3x4s, 4×6).

Opener Reyad Mohammed 31 (4×4, 1×6) and middle-order batsman Brandon Cabose 28 (3×6) also played their parts. Bowling for MMZ, pacers Navin Stewart and Kelvin Shewprasad took seven wickets between them. Stewart finished with 4-62 from eight overs and Shewprasad 3-31 from 7.4 overs. Rickey Kisson also grabbed two wickets. In reply, former National U-19 cricketer Looknauth Chinkoo 35 runs (21 balls, 1×4, 3×6) and former Berbice all-rounder Terrence Madramootoo 37 (22 balls, 3×4, 4×6) played a few shots and added 74 for the third wicket after MMZ lost their openers early. The resistance folded with Chinkoo and Madramootoo, as spin-bowling from Samuel Raghubir (4-10, 5 overs), skipper Persaud (3-15, 5.1 overs) and Brandon Cabose (2-46, 4.3 overs) resulted in MMZ being dismissed for 107 in 18.3 overs.
The teams are almost halfway through the competition.
