Five more COVID-19 deaths take June’s toll to 18

THE Ministry of Health, on Tuesday, reported that five more persons who tested positive for COVID-19, have succumbed to the deadly virus. The total number of deaths, which is now 416, is reflected in the ministry’s daily COVID-19 dashboard for June 8.
The latest fatalities are a 72-year-old woman from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who died on June 6; a 66-year-old man from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), who died on June 7; a 56-year-old woman from Region Three who died on June 6; a 70-year-old woman from Region Four who died on June 7; and a 65-year-old man from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), who died on June 6. They all died while receiving medical treatment at a Ministry of Health facility, and their deaths push the COVID-19 toll for June to 18.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Health, on Monday, recorded 87 new cases of COVID-19 from the 1,078 tests conducted for June 7. Of these, Region One (Barima-Waini) recorded nine; Region Three, three; Region Four, 31; Region Five, two; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 12; Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), 20, and Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice), 10.

The newly infected persons include 32 males and 55 females.
Currently, there are 17 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 95 in institutional isolation, 1,649 isolated at home, and three in institutional quarantine.
Guyana has confirmed a total of 17,805 cases of COVID-19 since the discovery of the deadly virus in the country. Of that number, 1,764 are currently active; and of the 15,628 recoveries, 108 were recorded within the past 24 hours.
All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
