Robber ‘sneaks up’ on elderly couple

A 56-year-old housewife of Columbia, Back Street, Essequibo Coast and her husband were on Saturday evening awakened to an intruder in their house, who allegedly made off with a quantity of jewellery and cash.

According to Police Headquarters, enquiries disclosed that the victim, who resides with her husband and grandson, secured her home and retired to bed around 21:30hrs, but was subsequently awakened by a noise in the house and awoke her husband.

The couple then noticed the silhouette of a male in the dark and both started to scream for help, which startled the intruder who made good his escape through a window.

The police reported that the victim further stated that subsequent to turning on the lights, she discovered that her wardrobe was broken into and a number of items were missing, along with several louvre panes from a window.

It was reported that some four gold chains valued at $378,000; one gold band valued at $240,000; three pairs of gold bangles worth $54,000 and $20,000 in cash were missing. A report was later made at the Anna Regina Police Station and an investigation is in progress.
