DIGICEL Guyana is paying the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination fees for some 30 students of the Sophia Night School.

A press release from the telephone company noted that the goal of the CSEC programme is to provide young adults, who were unable to graduate from high school, with the opportunity to complete their CSEC examinations. In addition, three laptops were donated to be used by students without a device to attend virtual classes.

The Sophia Community Development Association’s coordinator, Orin Nelson, and programme director, Leroy Adolphus, accepted the donation at Digicel’s headquarters in Kingston. Simone Pierre, the Chief Commercial Officer of Digicel, speaking with some of the students, noted, “Education opens the door to numerous opportunities.”

She urged them to study hard since these exams could be the stepping stone to attending the University of Guyana. One of students commented how grateful she was for the unexpected refund as she is a single mother and “getting this money back is such a surprise and will go a far way for my son. Thank you Digicel, for this you made us very happy.”

The Sophia Community Development Association (SOCDA) is a community-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that provides programmes and activities aimed at promoting youth empowerment and education as vehicles or mechanisms for overcoming or reducing the prevalence of crime and violence in the Sophia community and its surrounding environs.

Digicel is pleased to be part of this joint effort with SOCDA in making over thirty students’ wishes of completing their CSEC examinations a reality.
