Man accused of ‘choke and rob’ granted bail

DESMOND McPherson, who allegedly choked a man before his accomplice relieved him of a cellphone and cash, was, on Friday, placed on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Leron Daly when he made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

McPherson called ”Baby boy” of Meadow Brook Gardens, pleaded not guilty to the robbery with aggravation charge.

It is alleged that McPherson, on June 2, 2021, at Longden Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of another, robbed Julian Dow of one Samsung cellular phone valued at $160,000 and $153,500 cash.

According to the prosecution, at about 22:05 hours, McPherson was walking along the eastern pavement of Longden Street proceeding in the direction of the Berbice car park, when someone grabbed him by the neck.

While he was in a choke-hold, another man began searching his pockets. The robber later took possession of the items mentioned in the charge.

Ranks on patrol duty were passing at the time of the incident and managed to apprehend McPherson. His accomplice escaped with the cash and phone.

The accused was arrested and later charged.

The matter was adjourned until July 9, 2021.
