Nearly 47% of all COVID-19 cases recorded in Region Four
FROM the day that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) arrived on these shores to present, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) has continuously accounted for the largest number of infections, with 4,451 of the 9,486 confirmed cases being recorded there, according to the Ministry of Health’s daily COVID-19 dashboards.
Of the most recent cases, Region Four again accounts for the majority, with 26 of the 44 being recorded there, and the remaining 18 coming from Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), which recorded 10; Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), which recorded one each; and Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), which recorded three each. To date, nine persons have been admitted to the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 45 are institutionally isolated; 767 are confined to their homes; while nine are institutionally quarantined. Of Guyana’s total number of confirmed cases (9,486), 830 are currently active; and of the 8,453 recoveries, 23 were recorded within the past 24 hours. All Guyanese are being urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six-foot physical distance from others, and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
