CLOSE to seventy cricket clubs in the Ancient County, on Sunday last, received balls from the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) under the first ever Shimron/Nirvani Hetmeyer/Berbice Cricket Trust Fund.

The balls, worth over eight hundred thousand dollars, were shared out to representatives of the clubs at an impressive ceremony at the St Francis Community Developers Centre.
BCB president, Hilbert Foster, described the distribution as another major development for cricket in the County.

Foster disclosed that over the last three years, clubs and over 300 youth cricketers have benefitted from over fourteen million dollars’ worth of balls, gears, catching cribs, scorebooks, uniforms, bicycles, educational materials and school bags, among others.

He hailed the Hetmyers for their massive contribution to the game, especially Shimron, for remembering his roots.

The West Indies middle-order batsman, in brief remarks, stated that he was delighted to assist Berbice cricket since the County had played a major role in his personal development.
He also stated that he was pleased with the development of Berbice cricket and committed to assisting in the future.

Minister of Natural Resources and BCB Patron, Vickram Bharrat, who was the Guest Speaker, spoke extensively on the importance of education, discipline, club management and the need for players to give back to society.

The BCB Patron praised Hetmyer for the major role he was playing in Berbice cricket and wished him all the best in the future.
