SURGICAL Associates Guyana is offering free prostate cancer screening to 50 men, during the month of March at its office located at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Parade Street, Georgetown, Guyana.

The screening includes a free consultation and evaluation by urologist, Dr Rajendra Sukhraj, and a free prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Men between the ages of 45 and 69 years, who have never been screened for prostate cancer, are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Caribbean men. In fact, the Caribbean has some of the highest prostate cancer mortality rates in the world. Caribbean men of African ancestry are particularly at risk, with one in six expected to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Screening tests are designed to detect cancer at the early stages, at which point a cure is still possible. Prostate cancer screening has been shown to improve mortality rates and prevent metastatic cancers, which spreads to other parts of the body.

This prostate cancer screening initiative is possible with the corporate support of Ansa McAL Trading Limited. It is also an expression of social responsibility by Surgical Associates Guyana.

Surgical Associates Guyana is a group of Guyanese surgeons who are highly skilled in their respective fields and have a common mission of providing the Guyanese people with first world level surgical care.

Appointments can be made by calling 613-6464, or for further information Dr. Rajendra Sukhraj can be contacted on telephone 645-6922.
