Two deaths, 28 new COVID-19 cases recorded

A MAN, aged 38, and a woman, 79, from Regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Four (Demerara-Mahaica) respectively, on Wednesday, succumbed to COVID-19 while receiving medical care at a Ministry of Health facility. These two bring the number of COVID-19 deaths for February to 17, and the total number for the pandemic to 195, with five deaths being recorded within the past 48 hours. In the meantime, the Ministry of Health has recorded 28 new cases of COVID-19 for Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Of these, four were recorded in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 17 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); two in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); two in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo); and two in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
No new cases were recorded for Regions One (Barima-Waini), Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), or Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
There are currently four persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Thirty-eight persons remain institutionally isolated while 418 persons are isolated at home.

Ten persons are institutionally quarantined. The ministry has additionally recorded 56 recoveries, with 657 tests carried out, for Wednesday. The number of active cases is currently 470. All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others, and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
