SAMUEL Whaul, was, on Tuesday, freed of a rape charge by the Sexual Offences Court of the Demerara High Court, after a jury returned a not guilty verdict.
Whaul of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was on trial before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall, for allegedly engaging in sexual penetration with a 20-year-old woman on October 25, 2018, at the Promenade Gardens, Georgetown, The jury, after deliberating for almost two hours found Whaul not guilty of rape. He was also found not guilty of the alternative count of sexual assault. Whaul was represented by attorney Adrian Thompson, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutors Sarah Martin and Nafeeza Baig. He was out on $200,000 bail during trial.

According to the report, Whaul is known to the victim, since they had communicated frequently on Facebook.
On the day in question, both parties met at a location in Georgetown and then went to the Promenade Gardens. It is alleged that while there Whaul told the victim to sit on his lap, which she did. Whaul reportedly unbutton her pants, placed one of his hands inside and fondled her. He held onto her neck with his other hand.
The woman tried to fight Whaul off during the alleged rape. She later saw some basketball players and raised an alarm, but Whaul managed to escape.
After the ordeal, the victim reported the matter to the police and Whaul was arrested and later charged.
