-Open Championship scheduled for May
THE Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association executive members have decided to tread lightly in 2021 and will limit their activities for the year.
Technical Director of the association Deion Nurse called the year a “short and temporary one”.
He noted that there are a few administrative engagements in the first quarter, but in terms of competitions, he said that the association would monitor the Covid-19 pandemic and if all is well, it would host its Open Championships on May 2.
Nurse noted that even if the conditions were perfect for the hosting of the event earlier in the year it would be difficult since the athletes have not been training at the level required.
“Most of the athletes have been doing minimum works home, this is not the ideal thing. Since the re-opening of the gyms, turn out has been poor, however we are expecting things to get back slowly.”
Next month, the GAWA is hoping to run off its Electoral AGM. That meeting is tentatively set for February 6.
According to Nurse, the International Weightlifting Federation’s Electoral Congress is scheduled for late March and the local body will also pay keep attention to that.
If conditions are right for the hosting of the Open Championships, Nurse said that the association would also look to do a training course in the second quarter of 2021.
“We only have one plan for now, by April we will be in a better positioned to make further decisions. We are trying to also finalise a Level 2 Conditioning Coaching Course.”
