DERECK Gaskin, who reportedly damaged a number of items while chopping another during an argument over a stolen cellular phone, on Monday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was released on $20, 000 bail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
Gaskin called “Brains” pleaded not guilty to two charges – damage to property and unlawful wounding.
It is alleged that on December 3 last at Curtis Street, Albouystown, he damaged one PVC ceiling, a wooden table and ceramic tile, together valued at $49,000, property of Nicketta Plass.
Further, it is alleged that Gaskin on the same date and at the same place, unlawfully wounded Jermain Johnson.
Prosecutor Austin told the court that the two men are known to each other but are not on speaking terms. Gaskin had accused Johnson of stealing his mother’s phone.
On the day in question, Johnson was at a shop in Albouystown when Gaskin and another man entered. Johnson was approached and asked to return the stolen phone. Once again, Johnson denied knowledge of the theft.
Gaskin then became angry, reportedly took a cutlass and dealt Johnson several chops about his body, including the head. During the chopping incident, Gaskin reportedly damaged the items mentioned in the charge. The matter was immediately reported to the police and Gaskin was subsequently arrested and charged.
Magistrate Isaacs – Marcus granted the accused $10,000 bail on each charge.
The matter was adjourned until February 16.
