DARRIOUS Barrington, who bravely walked away after snatching a woman’s gold chain, was, on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus. He denied the larceny from the person charge during his appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The charge alleged that Barrington on December 24, at Water Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, stole from the person of Reneé Caesar one gold chain and pendant valued at $300,000. Prosecutor Austin told the court that on the day in question around 18:00hrs, Caesar was at Water Street, Stabroek with her family purchasing apples, when Barrington snatched her gold chain from around her neck and walked off.
Caesar raised an alarm and ran behind Barrington. The victim’s mother held onto him and there was a scuffle. He managed to free himself from the woman’s grip and ran into the Stabroek Market, where he was subsequently apprehended by an undercover policeman who had witnessed the scuffle. Barrington was escorted to the Stabroek Police Outpost where he was identified by Caesar and her mother. A search was conducted on his person, but the chain was not found. He was later charged. The matter was adjourned until February 8.
