The 22-year-old was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after feeling unwell.

According to her mother, Ormella Rafee, her daughter’s death is mysterious and only a post mortem can determine the real cause. She said Safia was her only daughter and she is trying to cope with the sad news that she is no more.

The mother said that ever since Safia’s father passed away, she has been grieving and has since stopped eating. The mother also related that her daughter went to the doctor for a normal check-up for her stomach and stayed in the hospital for some tests, since the family doctor requested same. At midday, she said her daughter called her saying she was not feeling well and told her she “won’t make it”.

“My daughter’s skin was filled with black and blue, it’s painful what’s happening. I just want peace and closure, it’s hurtful,” the saddened mother said.

Safia recently lost her father and was living with her mother at Dryshore, Essequibo Coast. She worked as a trainer and club member with STEM Guyana where she taught robotics to many youths.

She was described as friendly and willing to learn. Many of her social media friends have expressed profound sadness at the news her passing at such an early age.
