… Eleven of 13 Guyanese players register wins

ANGEL Rahim led a strong young team of Guyanese chess players to a respectable performance in the three-day FIDE Online World U10-18 Rapid Championships which concluded on Thursday evening.

The 17-year-old won four of her seven games to finish at seventh overall in the Girls’ U-18 division.

During the championships, she defeated some highly rated opponents across the globe, and finished ahead of several Women’s Fide Masters and Women’s Candidate Masters.

Although Rahim proved the most outstanding, several juniors excelled. In fact 11 of the 13 players who represented Guyana registered victories.

Arysh Raghunauth, Ethan Lee, Jaden Taylor and Anaya Lall finished with two wins each, while Kyle Couchman, Ronan Lee, Joshua Khan, Harmony Dodson, Anasie Fredericks and Sasha Shariff ended with a win apiece.

RAHIM’S DOMINANCE

The unrated player lost her opening clash, but rebounded nicely against Jaen Vasquez (1410 rapid ratings) from Panama in Round Two.  She went on to win back-to-back games against Haitian player Davena Jonet (1458) and Women FIDE Master Angie Garcia (rated 1802) in the third and fourth rounds.

Despite her ace performance, she could not get past Women International Master and eventual second-place finisher, Canadian Svitlana Demchenko (rated 2071) in Round Five.  Rahim however beat Jamaican Women Candidate Master Adani Clarke (rated 1811) in Round Six, before she fell to Mexican Andrea Ruiz in Round Seven.

Meanwhile, Raghunauth defeated Bermudan Dylan Flanagan in Round Four and Haitian Antony Salvane in Round Six.

In Round Five Harmony Dodson had overcome Haitian Kathiana Nicolas in the U-12 Division, while Jaden Taylor had gotten the better of Panama player Kendry Finlay. In Round Six deaf player Lall claimed her second victory when she defeated Barbadian Kayla Culpepper. The U-10 player had gone past Bahamian Chika Pride in Round Two.
