Three remanded for murder of gold miner

THREE men, including two Venezuelans, were, on Wednesday, remanded to prison for the gruesome murder of Kevin Allam, 26, a gold miner of Turn Basin, Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD), Region One.

Angel Figuera, 20, of Venezuela and Blankenburg; Gilberto Da Silva, 22, of Venezuela and Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo; and 22-year-old Nadeem Baksh of Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast, all gold miners, appeared via Skype before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

The men were not required to plead to the charge which read that, on November 27, 2020, at Turn Basin, they murdered Allam during the course or furtherance of a robbery. The trio was remanded to prison until December 22, 2020.

This newspaper had reported that, on November 27, around 17:30 hours, Allam’s reputed wife was at their shop located at Turn Basin when the suspects approached and held her by the hair.

Having observed this, Allam went to her assistance when the other two suspects pounced on him and dealt him several lashes about his body with a piece of wood until he became motionless.

He was then dragged a short distance away, where one of the suspects took out a knife and slit his throat, while another suspect held him down.
The bandits then proceeded into the shop and removed some raw gold but did not harm the wife after she pleaded for her life. The victim was subsequently picked up by the police and escorted to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On November 28, police at Port Kaituma, acting on information received, went to the water front and arrested the three suspects.
