Recaptured prison escapee on $100,000 bail

A MAN who escaped during a riot at Camp Street Prison on Sunday, July 9, 2017, was, on Monday, November 30, 2020, placed on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs – Marcus.

Shawn Collins, 24, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the ‘Escape from Lawful Custody’ charge.

The charge alleged that Collins, on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Camp Street, Georgetown, being in lawful custody at the Georgetown Prison, pending a criminal trial, escaped from custody.

Prosecutor Inniss informed the court that, on the day in question, Collins at the time was held captive at the Georgetown Prison when he, along with other inmates, went into an uproar, during which the prison was set on fire.

A prison officer was murdered and several others were severely injured by the inmates. During the commotion, Collins and others took the opportunity to escape from the prison.

Subsequently, a manhunt was launched and they were all recaptured by Joint Service Operations. Further investigations were carried out that led to Collins being charged.

Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus ordered that Collins report to the Station Sergeant at the Alberttown Police Station, every first Friday of each month, at 18:00 hours, until determination of the case.

The matter was adjourned until Monday, December 21, 2020.
