Prisoners use bed sheets to escape Lusignan prison

POLICE are on the hunt for three prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan prison holding bay, East Coast Demerara, using a rope made from bed sheets.
The escapees have been identified as murder accused, 48-year-old Phillip Jhogroo of Goed Intent, Leguan, Region Three; 18-year-old Mark Emanuel of Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, who was charged with robbery, and Donald Baird, 40, of Hardina Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown who was imprisoned for murder.

A statement from the Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, noted that the escape took place sometime between 01:28h and 01:48h Saturday.
At 05:20h, the Officer in Charge at the prison, Superintendent, Alstan Scott, discovered the rope made of bed sheets hanging from the south western corner of the prison fence.

“This, then prompted a physical muster and it was discovered that three prisoners were unaccounted for. Further investigations confirmed that they escaped from that prison location by scaling the said South Western fence where the improvised rope was found,” Samuels stated.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Prison Service is urging all family members and members of the public not to offer any support to the escapees and to contact the nearest Police Station with any information on their whereabouts.
