PHOENIX XI stormed to back-to-back wins over the weekend in the New York National Cricket League (NYNCL) at Baisley Pond in Queens, New York.
The predominantly overseas-based Guyanese team had defeated Unruly Cricket Club by 70 runs on November 7 in the Saturday T20 final before defeating Majestic Cricket Club by four wickets in the Sunday T20 final on November 8.
Against Majestic (who also have Guyanese players), Phoenix bowled first. Former Berbice inter-county all-rounder, Derick Narine, who played for Phoenix XI in the Saturday League, but for Majestic in the Sunday League, had teamed up with another Guyanese, Chris Patadin, and the pair carried Majestic to a quick start.
When Narine, who captained the side, fell in the third over for 20 (3X6s), Patadin, a former national U-19 cricketer, continued to work the ball around, but wickets were tumbling at the other end.
By the 20th over, Majestic had managed to labour to 131-9. Patadin, who struck six fours and a six in his run-a-ball 61, was left not out.
Former Guyana first-division player, Dino Chooweenam, led Phoenix’s bowling attack with 2-27 from four overs, while Trinson Carmichael also took two wickets.
In their turn at the crease, Chooweenam and former national youth player, Dominique Rikhi (who only played with Phoenix during the Sunday competition) had good starts. When Chooweenam fell in the fourth over for 26 (2X6s, 2X4s), number three batsman, Hemindra Ramdihal, belted three fours and a six for a 12-ball 25.
Although Rikhi top scored with just 29 (2X4s, 2X6s), his teammates were able to chip in enough to rally the side to victory.
A total of six players got into double figures, including Randall Wilson, who scored 18 from 16 balls towards the end, in a game that went down to the last ball.
