SEVERAL persons are now homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed two houses on Charlotte Street, Georgetown on Monday night.
Handel Mackenzie of Lot 167 Charlotte Street, who returned to his home on Tuesday to make an estimate of his losses, noted that there was burning scent at around 21:00 hours on Monday but he did not take it seriously since nothing was amiss at his house.
A few minutes after he retired to bed, Mackenzie said he was altered to a fire next door; he immediately ran out of the house as he had no time to save any valuables.
Mackenzie estimated a $10 million lost in valuables. Meanwhile, Eon Hargard, who resided at the bottom flat of the same building, noted that after he was alerted to the fire, he immediately rendered assistance to his next-door neighbour where the fire initially started, however, his attempts where futile due to the intensity of the flames.

“The neighbour called out that her house was smoking but when I reach up by she, it was already ravenous, she had to run out with she children and I had to run out with she too,” Hargard told the Guyana Chronicle.
According to Hagard, his neighbour had left her stove on which he believes caused the fire. Hagard, who appeared to be distressed at the time of the interview, could not give an estimate of his losses, but he did manage to save a few items.
