-100 children to get tablets, Internet
ENTERTAINMENT592 in celebration of its third anniversary will be providing tablets and internet connectivity to approximately 100 pupils and students who are unable to access their learning materials during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, the company’s CEO/Founder, Shauna Parker, stated that she and her team decided to host a promotion in celebration of their three-year anniversary.
“During the conversations we were talking about how we can grow the company and what more we can do during this time to help persons…so the idea came that…a lot of students do not have access to the new e-learning platform. So we decided that in celebration of our three years in business to do something to give back to the children,” she said.
Since the doors to schools have been shut, teachers have had to find other means of communicating with their students. Online platforms are being utilised, but many students do not have access to a computer, a tablet or a phone while others do not have Internet connectivity.
Originally, the team had started the initiative as a competition. However, after several conversations, the team opted to identify a few children, who were experiencing difficulties accessing their learning materials via the internet.
“We decided that we are going to identify at least 100 … less fortunate students that don’t have access [to the Internet] whether it be a laptop or basic school supplies or Internet to donate to them.”
Additionally, Parker noted that she and her team are currently in talks with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) to help provide Internet access to those students who are unable to access data and Wi-Fi.
“Now if they have the devices we can help to provide the Internet service to them or if they don’t have the device we will be able to donate the device to them as well as the Internet access to them,” Parker said.
She used the opportunity to call on persons who may have the means to assist others to share their services to help in educating the nation’s children during these uncertain times.
“If you know you have a service that can help somebody reach out to them let them now that hey I have this service happening and I know that you’ve been having a difficult time, we are here for you, we want to show you that in this coronavirus season everybody needs help,” she said.
“COVID-19 came unexpected. It is not something that you know we actually planned to happen. It came at a very unfortunate time and it affected many individuals including our children, who are the most vulnerable at this time,” Parker added.
