– Winner of ‘Culture Ministry’ logo competition urges

By Telesha Ramnarine

TROY Edmondson sets standards. So when he had a chance to enter the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport social media logo competition as a late entry, he did just that.
Troy did not give the competition a second though in its early stage and it was only when his fiancée Lisa Prashad showed him the winning entry that was initially chosen that they both thought, ‘We need to enter this competition.’

The winning logo entry designed by Edmondson and Prashad.

In an interview with the Buzz recently, he said he felt privileged to win, especially since he bettered 209 other entries.
It was no walk in the park, though, to come up with a suitable logo. The issue was that the Ministry covers so many things; it seemed impossible to fit everything that they are doing into culture, youth and sport—into one little logo.

“This was an extremely challenging logo as it combined three very large sectors of the ministry. There are so many things that fall under these categories; it really had us in a frenzy.”
So he sat down with Prashad and decided to use the ten most prominent and popular elements that would do justice to what the ministry covers. “The inspiration came from the ministry’s name itself… What can cause us to say culture, youth and sport? And we tried our best to capture everything that the ministry offers.”
Edmondson was high in praise for subject minister Charles Ramson Jr., whom he said took a bold step to have a more professional image for his ministry. “I would love to see more ministries get involved in a more professional way of branding. Majority of the ministries only uses the Coat of Arms and then the Ministry’s name goes right under…so I am hoping the others can follow suit.”

He also called on the other ministries and agencies to encourage more activities like this, so that local talent can be put to use. “We have a lot of talented people locally, so I believe the competition is an eye opener to everyone that we don’t have a limitation of talent. So we should try and utilise our talent here and there’s so much more creative work that can be produced.”

Having loved computer since high school, Edmondson decided to major in Computer Science at the University of Guyana. He helped hone his skills in the field with various programmes that were offered at Global Technology.

He started his first professional job at Kaieteur News as a junior graphics artist in 2008.

Meanwhile, the ministry has since extended congratulations to Edmondson and Prashad, and said it is grateful to all of those persons who participated in the logo competition.
The ministry also encouraged the artists to continue creating “incredible pieces of art.”
