CUSTOMS law enforcement officers on Monday intercepted a 26-year-old man from Paramaribo, Suriname, who was found in possession of one Beretta sub-machine gun, with the number defaced; 25 live 9mm ammunition and SRD 6,250 and US$3,000.

The arrest was made by the officers at approximately 22:00 hrs while on patrol duty at the Number 79 Village foreshore in Corriverton, Berbice.

While on patrol, the officers noticed a speedboat arriving from Suriname and pulling up at Eno Boat Landing. A search was conducted on the vessel, as well as its and passengers and their belongings, during which time the items were found on the unemployed man who resides at Zuelen, Paramaribo, Suriname.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody at the Springlands Police Station, along with the firearm and ammunition; same were marked, sealed and lodged by customs officers, in the presence of the suspect, who is assisting with the investigation.

The Suriname/Guyana borders have been closed since March due to the pandemic; however, persons have been using the back- track route to enter the country.

Recently, several persons were arrested, quarantined, and subsequently placed before the court.
