KNOWN as `The Eagle`, Andrew Murray had his last professional fight on September 25, 2001.

The former Commonwealth welterweight champion had moved up to the junior middleweight division to challenge Englishman Richard `The Secret’ Williams for the Commonwealth junior middleweight title.

It was no secret that Williams retained his crown when referee Dave Parris halted the contest at two minutes 21 seconds of the third round to hand Murray his third consecutive defeat within a 13-month period.

Guided by manager Odinga Lumumba `The Eagle’ had won the Commonwealth welterweight title in October 1993.

He later added the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin title to his resumé which included the World Boxing Council (WBC) FECARBOX belt.

However, the talented southpaw never fought for the Guyana welterweight title. Four months after the battle with Williams, Murray was involved in a fatal accident on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

He was just 30 years old. His death brought an end to a stellar career that included a memorable points-victory over American Kevin Pompey at the National Sports Hall and a “Hall of Fame’ knockout of Michael Covington.

He had made his debut in Barbados in 1990 against Alonzo Clarke and ended with a record on 27 wins (17 KOs) seven defeats one draw.

Murray’s son Andrew Murray Jr was also a talented amateur boxer but made a name for himself in football.
