Region One has no Electricity since March 2020

DURING a visit to Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, Chairman of Region One, Brentnol Ashley, and Vice Chairman, Sarah Browne, reported that there has been no electricity in the region since March of this year.

Minister Edghill assured the two senior officials that since representation had been made, action will be taken to bring a resolution to the matter shortly, notwithstanding the novel coronavirus and the Ministry of Public Health’s and health agencies’ guidelines and precautionary measures to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Additionally, Minister Edghill has instructed his team at the Hinterland Electrification Company Inc. to make contact with the engineers/mechanics on the ground to have the engines up and running immediately as he would like the people to regain their power supply tonight.

It was reported, in 2019, that Santa Rosa Mission, in the Moruca sub-region of the North West District, in Region One Barima / Waini, had not received electricity due to a burst power line, and both residents and businesses in the region’s Mabaruma township have had to contend with a reduction in their power supply due to mechanical problems affecting one of the generators servicing the area.
