Gov’t rolls out vocational training for Sophia youths

YOUTHS between the ages of 16 to 25 years will be exposed to six months of vocational skills training compliments of the Sophia Training Centre.

The programme which is being undertaken by the Ministry of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sports, caters for youths who are residents of Sophia and its environment and will last for six months. Areas that will be covered in the training programme include; catering, information technology, plumbing, masonry, welding and fabrication and refrigeration and air conditioning.

Application forms are available at the Training Centre, Dennis Street Sophia, Monday to Friday between 8:00 hours and 14:00 hours or contact 219-0075, or 219- 0076. In September, 2019, more than 50 persons graduated from the Social Protection Ministry’s Board of Industrial Training (BIT) programme as the government continues to empower and provide opportunities for the young people of the country. The graduates were trained in the areas of Heavy Duty Equipment Operation and Apiculture.

The training courses were facilitated by the Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport – Youth Empowerment Unit, in collaboration with BIT. The Coalition government during the year 2019 had rolled out a number of skill training programmes in an effort to reduce youth unemployment and increase entrepreneurship and mentorship training in the nation.
