19 new COVID cases recorded in the Rupununi

…15 new cases recorded in Region 7 over the weekend

The total number of active cases of the Coronavirus in Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) has climbed by 19 following a series of recent tests.

At the moment  41 positive cases of the virus have been recorded in that region, with 36 of those being active cases.

The 19 new cases were recorded at Annai (2), Aranaputa (4),Wowetta (1),Potarinau (6),Katuur (2), Baitoon (2) and Quiko (2).

On Saturday 4 new cases were were listed and they are said to be from the South Central area of the region at the villages of Potarinao and Quiko.

The new cases are from 47 samples which were brought to the city to the National Reference Lab for analysis on Friday last.In recent weeks, mass testing has been undertaken in the region and last week, a COVID-19 team travelled to another area, the North Rupununi, to carry out more testing there following new cases which were recorded there recently at the village of Aranaputa.

Thus far,a  total of 172 tests have been carried out by the Regional Health authorities in the Rupununi.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud

On Monday, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shamdeo Persaud reported in a  daily update provided by the Ministry of Public Health, that the number of active cases in Institutional Isolation is 188; 34 persons are in institutional quarantine and 4 persons are in the COVID-Intensive Care Unit. He said that to date, 181 persons have recovered from the pandemic in Guyana.

The new cases of the virus are mainly from the Hinterland regions with the more recent cases emanating from Region 7 and Region 9.

Over the weekend, 15 new cases were recorded in Region 7.On Saturday, 9 new cases were recorded in that region while on Sunday, 6 new cases were recorded there.

Dr Persaud noted that the authorities  continue to emphasize that there is need for more community action in stopping the spread of the virus.
