One of three accused of rape set free

NICK SKEETE, on Monday, March 16, 2020, walked out of the Sexual Offences Court, a free man, after the 12-member jury was directed by the judge to return a not-guilty verdict.
Skeete called ‘Jason Blair’ and ‘Shatta’ was on trial alongside Harold Anderson and John Lee Edmond for the offence of raping a woman.

The indictment read that, on July 9, 2016, the trio had sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent. The alleged incident took place in Lethem.

The trial started last week, with state prosecutors presenting the case before the jury.
However, after the close of the prosecution’s case on Monday, defence attorney Ravindra Mohabir made a no-case submission on behalf of Skeete to Justice Jo-Ann Barlow.

Justice Barlow upheld Mohabir’s submission, agreeing that the state did not establish a prima facie case.

The judge then directed the jury to return a non-guilty verdict, as a result of which Skeete walked free.

Justice Barlow will give directions in relation to the other two accused persons on Wednesday.
