Mason in court for smuggling ‘ganja’ into prison

A 31-year-old Esaun Rose of Laing Avenue, Georgetown, was, on Friday, arraigned before Magistrate Leron Daly, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of introducing narcotics into prison.

The charge alleged that, Rose on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at Camp Street, Georgetown, introduced a narcotic, specifically cannabis, into the Georgetown Prison. When the charge was read to Rose he pleaded not guilty.

According to the report, on the day in question, ranks from the Brickdam Police Station and Georgetown Prison were on duty at Camp Street. At the time, Rose arrived to deliver toiletries for a remand prisoner. The toiletries were searched by a female prison officer who observed holes to be at the end of 6 blue soaps.

The prison officer brought it to the attention of the police, who slashed each soap in the presence of her and Rose. Several small, plastic-wrapped parcels which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, were found. The police cautioned the defendant and then arrested him.

He was subsequently charged. The substance amounted to 47grammes, and was placed into evidence. Magistrate Daly granted Rose $50,000 bail and adjourned the matter to Friday, May 8, 2020.
