– third exercise planned for today at Corriverton
THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the George Subraj Foundation are currently hosting free eye care clinics across the country.
Some of the areas being targeted this year are Wakenaam, Mahaica, Berbice and St. Cuthbert’s. Last Tuesday, the team visited the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital, and last Thursday the Little Biaboo Health Centre, Mahaica Creek.
Today, the team will head to D P. Ketwaroo and Sons (Preacher Man) place at
Line Path, Corriverton, while its last stop will be on February 2 at St. Cuthbert’s Mission in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).
The team promises free eye tests and eye glasses, and includes Drs. Rahul M. Jindal, Stephen Guy, Thakor J. Patel, Joseph Pasternak and Steven Waller.
Foundation Members (Founder, the Late Mr. George Subraj) are Gloria Subraj, Tony Subraj, Jasmine Subraj, Mahindro Jainarine and Richard B. Mahase, along with GPHC Department of Ophthalmology Staff. The late Mr. Subraj has completed 34 missions, participating in both kidney and cornea transplants. His team also initiated the nationwide health education programme (SEVAK), providing free hypertension and glucose testing.
Since the early 1990s, George Subraj, a US-based Guyanese, has been assisting in enhancing the quality of healthcare in Guyana, with specific focus on ophthalmology. Since the cost-of-living has in some cases been astronomical, the Foundation has sought to address this critical eye-care need, mostly in the rural areas of the country, thereby affording persons the opportunity to access quality healthcare at little or no cost.
