Education is more than academics

-First Lady tells Linden Foundation CSEC awardees

FIRST LADY, Mrs. Sandra Granger, emphasized the importance of education in personal and national development, in her address, on Thursday afternoon, at the Linden Foundation Secondary School’s prize-giving ceremony.

The First Lady reminded the 82 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) awardees, teachers and well-wishers that education was more than just academics.

“Education as I understand it, also includes the moral values we instil in our children; awareness of their culture and consciousness of their place as integral members of the family, the community and the nation. Grounded in this education, our children and adults [will] recognise their important role in the growth and development of our country” Mrs. Granger said.

She also encouraged the graduates to see education as a continuous process of lifelong learning. “No longer are we free to say ‘I completed secondary or university education’…The pace of development and innovation in the modern world demands that we keep abreast of these developments or we will be left behind,” she said.

Mrs. Granger, on behalf of President David Granger, later handed over the President’s Award for Excellence to the school’s 2019 Best Graduating CSEC student, Ms. Ronique Sancho. Ms Sancho who wrote 11 subjects obtained six Grade ones, four Grade twos and one Grade three.

Headteacher, Ms. Verlyn Pitt, in her remarks, informed those present that the school recorded an overall 79% pass rate (Grades one to three) at this year’s sitting. She said it was the first time in the school’s history that one student gained more than four Grade ones. In addition to the CSEC students, 38 students from Grades seven to ten received prizes for their exceptional work during the last academic term. The simple ceremony was held in the school’s auditorium at the school’s location in Central Amelia’s Ward, Mackenzie, Linden, Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region Ten). (Ministry of the Presidency)
