THE visiting Indian women’s cricket team, led by captain Hermanpreet Kaur, was, on Monday evening, hosted by Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr K.J. Srinivasa and his wife, Ashwini Srinivasa.

At the well-attended reception held at India House, their Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara residence, High Commissioner Srinivasa praised the performance of the women cricketers, who have enjoyed a very successful tour of the Caribbean.

“I have been following this team since my days in South Africa, before coming here. I remember, in 2017, before they went on to play in the women’s World Cup, they played in South Africa in a quadrangular series and we could see that this team plays to win, and that is one of the big qualities in modern day sports,” he told a very appreciative gathering.

The Indian envoy, who has reached out to practically every major player in Government since assuming his post in Guyana, some three months ago, also spoke with great optimism of collaboration between the West Indies Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in mutual interest of both teams.

“I must confess here that during my interaction with the West Indies Cricket Board, we found that there are so many ways to collaborate, to improve and to help both teams flourish. I see the desire, on both sides, to help improve, and, in that, I think the BCCI would be very forthcoming to collaborate with the West Indies Cricket Board to help nurture new talents,” he said.

Head coach of the Indian team, former Test cricketer, Woorkeri Raman, also spoke at the reception. He, the Indian skipper, and team manager, Trupti Bhattacharya, were presented with tokens of appreciation by High Commissioner, Srinivasa and Mrs Srinivasa. At the conclusion of the formal presentations at the reception, the invited guests took the opportunity to meet and interact with the visiting Indian team.
