Appeal Court upholds sentence of man guilty of ‘wounding’.

IN 2016, 28-year-old Alvin Ragobeer was sentenced to serve 10 years in prison, by High Court Judge, Jo-Ann Barlow, for severing a man’s hand during a dispute.
Ragobeer, who was initially indicted for attempted murder, was found guilty of the lesser count of wounding by a mixed 12-member jury.

He was convicted for wounding Nowrattan Wilmont with intent to maim, disable or disfigure him, on October 3, 2007.

Ragobeer, with the aid of his attorney, Sonia Parag, moved to the Appeal Court to challenge his conviction and sentence.

Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Yonette Cummings-Edwards, and Justices of Appeal Rishi Persaud and Dawn Gregory at the appeal court, Kingston, on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, dismissed the appeal.

After reviewing the case which was presented by State Prosecutor Teshana James-Lake, the appeal court affirmed the conviction and sentence of Ragobeer.

According to reports, Wilmont and Ragobeer’s grandfather were involved in an argument. However, Ragobeer, who was 16 at the time, armed himself with a cutlass and attacked Wilmont and chopped him on his shoulder and left leg.

Wilmont attempted to bar another chop with his hand and it was severed.
