BASSETERRE, St Kitts, (CMC) – West Indies all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall’s whirlwind knock underlined Leeward Islands Hurricanes’ second win of the Super50 Cup, as they whipped Canada by 70 runs in their Group A contest here Friday.

Opting to bat first at Warner Park, Hurricanes rattled up 257 all out with five balls left in the innings, behind Cornwall’s aggressive 92 off 75 deliveries.

The burly 26-year-old, who will fly out to India shortly to join the West Indies Test squad in preparation for the one-off Test against Afghanistan at month end, crunched five fours and seven sixes in a scintillating display.

Discarded Test opener Kieran Powell found form with 58 off 70 balls while Jeremiah Louis lashed a cameo 40 off 30 deliveries down the order.

Harsh Thaker, a 22-year-old off-spinner, braved the Hurricanes assault to finish with three for 24 from seven solid overs.

In reply, Canada never quite found their momentum and were dismissed for 187 in the 43rd over, with seamer Sheno Berridge snaring four for 36 and left-arm spinner Jason Campbell (2-19), off-spinner Cornwall (2-30) and pacer Louis (2-42) all finishing with two wickets each.

Captain Kanwarpal Tathgur top-scored with a breezy 49 while Nitish Kumar got 27 and Rayyankhan Pathan, 26, but Canada never really recovered after finding themselves on 91 for five in the 23rd over.

The victory was the second on the trot for Hurricanes who opened with a crushing 198-run victory over CCC Marooners last Thursday.

Powell, who counted seven fours, put on 44 for the first wicket with Montcin Hodge (13) to give the hosts a solid start but wickets tumbled regularly thereafter to leave them on 128 for six in the 32nd over.

Cornwall then anchored two key stands to get his side past 200, first adding 38 for the seventh wicket with Terrance Ward (9) and then 72 off 41 balls for the eighth wicket with Louis, who belted two fours and three sixes.

Thaker helped to keep Canada in the game, accounting for both Cornwall and Louis in successive overs late on.

Canada’s run chase received an early blow when they lost Jeet Metha to the fifth ball of the innings without scoring, with just a single run on the board.

And Kumar and Pathan posted 36 for the second wicket but both were casualties in a slide that claimed four wickets for 54 runs, as Canada tumbled to 91 for five in the 23rd over.

Tathgur, who punched five fours and a six, joined with wicketkeeper Shreyas Movva (8) to frustrate Leewards in a 44-run, sixth wicket stand but Movva’s demise in the 33rd over saw the last five wickets fall for 52 runs.
