Teen who was allegedly slapped by a police granted bail

MAGISTRATE Faith McGusty, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, granted $20,000 bail to a teen who was charged with a series of offences.

19-year-old Shamar Nelson of Norton Street, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the three charges when they were read to him.
Particulars of the first charge stated that, on November 1, 2019 at Mandela Avenue, Nelson used threatening behavior towards Police Constable Edward Lowenfield.

The second charge stated that, on the same day and at the same place, while in a public place, Nelson behaved in a disorderly manner.

The last charge stated that, on the same day and at the same place, Nelson resisted arrest by Constable Lowenfield.

Attorney-at-law Paul Fung-at-fat, who represented Nelson in the matter, asked the court for reasonable bail to be granted to his client and told the court that Nelson was stopped by a traffic police because he switched lane.

Fung-at-fat added that his client and the police had an exchange of words and the officer dealt Nelson a slap. The police then arrested him and took him to the station.
Magistrate Faith McGusty after listening to the lawyer granted Nelson $20,000 bail and adjourned that matter until November 13, 2019.
