Dear Editor,
US Senator Edward Kennedy joined the elections postponement lobby and is appealing to the President Desmond Hoyte to delay the polls until the voter’s list is revised above reproach. The list is clearly flawed, and few believed that an election based on it can be viewed as fair, Kennedy said in a statement faxed to Stabroek News.
Kennedy’s appeal came as former US President Jimmy Carter awaited a response from then Elections Commission Chairman Dr. Rudy Collins to a letter they sent last week following Collins insistence that he can correct the seriously flawed list in time for Elections Day. Collins claimed that the PCD Alliance had made non-negotiable demands for cleaning up the list. Some of the Alliance’s recommendations required Constitution changes.
Senator Kennedy said developments over the last years 1990 and 1991 have made Hoyte’s intentions unclear, at best. He has made some progress, but problems remain, the Massachusetts Senator said. Just like 1992, the list is a matter of contention again.
We saw the aftermath of the 1992 elections. Are we waiting on a next US Senator’s advice.
Senator Kennedy died in 2009.
Commissioner Vincent Alexander’s call is correct. Clean up the list and verify every voter.
Regards,
George Williams
